Very nice, clean, tightly bound program -- tan cover with sepia photograph of then Congressman Charles Rangel on cover. Published for Ohio state NAACP conference at the Cascade Holiday Inn in Akron, Ohio October 4-6,1974 at which Rangel was welcomed. Local advertising, plus transcript of speech given by William McMillan, then president of the Akron NAACP. Also much information on discrimination in city jobs in Akron and resolutions concerning both that and schools. Measures 8-1/2"x11" qnd is marred only by one brown spot inear spie at front and another at back.

Book itself is crisp and clean with no names or writing and no bumps to bright pumpkin colored boards. Jacket is quite good, but does show a rectagular shadow to front from a bookstore sticker adhered to noncoated paper which is why we don't dare try to remove it. Spine has also sunned on jacket and there is a small tear to bottom back corner with a small loss of color and mild soil to back outer side edge. Book has not been price-clipped and is most handsome in mylar.Originally published in a run of only 219 copies in 1953. Written by the Caribbean poet who rose to notoriety during the 1930's as the leading propoent of "negritude", a philosophy that "rehabilitates" black culture and selfhood. Picasso's drawings were created specifically for this work. Written in English with French at back of book. Measures 8"x10-1/4".

This book is also Shirley Ann Grau's masterpiece. She has wirtiten many novels, but this one won the Pulitzer Prize for its theme of rage and racism. Grau is a Southern writer.The book measures 6" x 9" and has 327 pages.

Traces the history of slavery in America through the time of the Emancipation Proclamation and profiles such well-known figures as Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth, but also the lesser known such as Henry Box Brown who built a crate and mailed himself to freedom. 151 pages. The author was a Belgian scientist who arrived in New Orleans in 1857 whereupon he found himself disturbed by the ongoing slavery. After a stint of helping slaves and Unionists excape from Confederate Texas to Mexico. Eventually he returned to Louisiana where he got a job at a Feench language paper, L'Union, which became the New Orleans Tribune, the first African American daily in the U.S..where he ardently defnded the Black population. Book measures 5-3/4" x 8-1.2" and has 168 pages including index.

Book is the result of a symposium on this Ohio author who was actually blackballed for membership to the Rowfant Club after giving a talk there because he was half African American. Chestnutt was an attorney, political activist, essayist, and novelist with a strong interest in interracial relations post-Civil War. Book has 110 pages.
