Ayscough, Florence Firecracker Land; Pictures of the Chinese World for Younger Readers Cambridge Houghton Mifflin / The Riverside Press 1932 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Fair Book itself is very clean and nice with yellow boards printed in blue with design of Chinese kites. Nice map endpapers. Dustjacket is tattered with tears and creasing to top front and two small chips to same area, as well as a few other scattered small chips and one large one at crown of spine. Also a few small edgetears to upper back. Jacket has not been price-clipped and has been placed in brand new mylar for protection. Book is charmingly illustrated throughout with drawings by Lucille Douglass who also wrote a touching introduction about the author and how she brought the great dancer Pavlova to perform for Chinese children. The text is lovely -- for older children, but interesting for adults as well -- and discusses Chinese life and people, festivals, arts, travel and homes.351 pages. A gem.

Beck, Louis J. New York's China Town; An Historical Presentation of Its People and Places New York Bohemia Publishing Company 1898 First Edition Hard Cover Good-plus No DJ Book is clean and tightly bound, but does show wear to crown and tail of spine including a small piece missing at crown. Hinges are tight, but back one shows a repair made with Japan paper similar in color to endpapers. Hinge is strong and tight, but you can see cracking to pages through repair paper (see photo). Silver ornamentation is bright on both face and spine and there are no names or writing. Book provides a detailed history of New York City's China Town during the last decade of the 19th century. Text is plentiful and detailed and is augmented by both both small black and white photos and drawings of daily life. The author covers quite a few topics including governance, the Chinese restaurants and laundries, the seclusion of women, family life, music, opium smoking (includes a detailed drawing of the apparatus), playing fan-tan, Chinese lotteries, prostitution, slave girls, Chinese funerals, Chinese cemeteries and much more. A fascinating book of 329 pages.
