Title: Johannes Schwalm The Hessian Binding: Hard Cover Book Condition: Very Good Jacket Condition: Very Good Edition: Third Printing Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall Publisher: The Johannes Schwalm Historical Association 1976 Seller ID: 17493A
A very nice, very hard to find book. Measures 9"x11-1/2" and is free of names or writing and clean as a whistle inside and out with snow white pages and page edges. Red leatherette boards show virtually no wear, but are slightly bowed at top. Pages are tightly bound with a small bit of waviness to side edge only and just to the last pages. The jacket shows light areas from sunning to entire spine and some of front, a tiny tear next to spine, a few rubbed spots to back and a few areas of minor edgwear. Looks very handsome in brand new mylar. Limited edition, but no number filled in on number page. The emphasis of the book is dual -- the Hessian Regiment von Knyphausen in which Johannes Schwalm served in the Liebkompanie during the American Revolution and the Die Schwalm area of Hesse-Cassel, Germany in the valley of the Schwalm River from which Joannes and many of this comrades derived. Schwalm had been recruited by George III to fight in the Revolution. Once in the colonies, however, he was captured and eventually released in a prisoner exchange, only to be jailed in Philadelphia later. Not much is known about why Schwalm chose to remain in America, but remain he did in the Pennsylvania area. The book is filled with wonderful black and white photographs, as well as facsimile documents and a tremendous amount of historical and genealogical material, including short genealogical records for relating families which include Bobb, Stein, Klinger and Schmeltz. Anyone tracing the Schwalm line will find this reference invaluable. An appendix lists a 1776 inventory of the Hessian company's clothing and its condition, an undated listed of biographical information and a 1779 inventory of ammunition and who carried how much. 293 pages. We also have availavle two copies of the Journal of Johannes Schwalm Historical Association from 1986 and '87 respectively.
