Popular Science Publishing Company 1937 Vol. 131, No. 4 Soft Cover Very Good 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
Great copy of this early classic. Clean as whistle inside and out with no loss of paper to spine. Minor edgewear and one flat crease to back cover only faults. Interesting color ad for Chesterfield cigarettes at back featuring an ashtray fashioned of a statue of the Three Musketeers.. Articles abound, as do photos and ads, but the things that popped out were a great article on the use of marionettes in Hollywood, one on archery, catching rattlesnakes for fun, and building a home-made planetarium from "odds and ends." There are also plans to build a beautiful dollhouse, as well as short pieces about inventions and amazing scientific finds.

918 Brownlow, Maraget Herbs and the Fragrant Garden
New York McGraw Hill 1963 Second Edition Revised and Enlarged Hard Cover Very Good Very Good 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
What a lovely book this! The pastel art drawn by the author is beautiful and the feel of the heavy paper a bibliophile's delight. Book is very clean with no names or writing. Only fault to books iself is one small stain hidden beneath endflaps, front and back, caused by the tape used to fit together the original mylar cover. The tape was never on the book itself -- it just browned with age and transferred a small spot. We have replaced it with brand new. No price-clip. Herbs, plus aromatic and scented shrubs, are discussed. Book is both practical in terms of idntification, cultivation, harvesting and use, but also provides charm and interest with history and mythology. 223 pages.

919 Bruce, Brian Thomas Boyd: Lost Author of the "Lost Generation"
Akron, Ohio, U.S.A. Univ of Akron Press 2006 1931968330 Hard Cover Fine Fine
Crisp, clean, as new book. No bumps to corners, no names or writing, no tears or chips. Dustjacket protected by brand new mylar cover. Fascinating look at a virtually unknown author who was mentored and edited by the great Maxwell Perkins who did the same for Ernest Hemingway during the same time period. But unlike Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Sherwood Anderson, and the other famous Lost generation writers, Boyd carved out a writing career ar with no advantages. Only one of his books -- a WWI novel entitled Throught the Wheat -- received crtitical acclaim and only three sold more than 5000 copies. Yet Boyd's story is compelling precisely because ii stands in contrast to those of the "bad boy writers" of the period.

945 Burgess, Thornton What Farmer Brown's Boy Did
Racine, Wisconsin Whitman 1927 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good-plus
This is a very nice book replete with scarce dustjacket. Also unusual insofar as the text block has not detached, as is so often the case with these inexpensively produced vintage children's books. Book is clean and bright with colorful illustrations throughout by Nina R. Jordan. Part of the Cubby Bear series. Jacket shows corner wear and a small tear to bottom front edge near spine and another vee-shaped one at top back edge at outer corner. Book measures a wee 4-3/4"x5-1/2". Other Cubby Bear titles available from same series.

946 Burgess, Thornton Cubby Finds an Open Door
Racine, Wisconsin Whitman 1929 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good Jordan, Nina R.
Book itself is very nice -- slight wear only and text block firmly adhered to boards whicb is often not the case with these delicate little books. We at one time had had them all and about half had detached. The jacket on this one shows small edge tears and wear, as well as two chips -- one affecting the red border at bottom back edge and the other at top back edge. Because the cover art matches the jacket it's hard to see them at first glance. Charming color art throughout. Measures a diminutive 4-1/2"xx5-1/2". Other Cubby Bear titles available from same series.

Racine, Washington Whitman 1927 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
Charming little book and a scarce Burgess title in the popular Cubby Bear Series. Unusual to find the dustjacket, but here we have it marred only by edgewear and two small tears at back edge. The book itself is bright and clean and the text block is still adhered, again an unsual find due to the inexpensive stapled binding. Cute art by Nins R. Jones. A dimunitive treasure measuring almost 6" across and 5" high. Other Cubby Bear titles available from series.

953 Burningham, John Cloudland
New York, New York, U.S.A. Crown Publishing 1996 0517709287 First American Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
Crisp, beautiful copy. No names or writing. Dustjacket shows small bit of wrinkling to front endflap, but is most handsome in brand new mylar cover. Has not been price-clipped. The art in this book is particularly noteworthy for its marriage of realism and cartoonlike fantasy. It's just right for this fanciful tale of a little boy who falls off a cliff during a mountain trip with his parents, but is magically caught by the cloud children who take him on a journey of imagination that's lighter than air. He even rides the jet stream! But even this much fun can't last forever when the pleasures of home and family beckon. TWO copies available.

957 Burroughs, Laura Lee Flower Arranging; A Fascintating Hobby (3 Volume Set Coca-Cola Collectible)
Toronto, Canada Coca-Cola 1940 Soft Cover Good-plus
This three volume set is hard to find in its entirety with the third volume being the most difficult to track down, but here we have them all. They were published one each year in 1940, 1941 and 1942. The first two are entitled Flower Arranging -- A Fascinating Hobby, while volume three got a new title -- Homes and Flowers; Refreshing Arrangements. All are by Laura Lee Burroughs who is pictured in volume three holding a bottle of Coke. This is one of those "hidden" Coke collectibles that is such fun to find! The first volume is slightly smaller than the later ones. It measures 7-1/2" square, while the other two measure 7"x9". All three show light exterior wear, but are clean and tightly bound. There is light foxing at front few pages of the latter two, but it's quite mild. Volume I is unpaginated, the other two show 80 pages each. Photos are abundant and great if you want to copy the arrangements. There's also instructions, but the real value here is the fact that it's a Coke collectible which derived from Canada.

973 Butterfield, C.W. Magazine of Western History Illustrated December, 1886
Cleveland, Ohio The Magazine of Western History 1886 Soft Cover Very Good  Wraps, Good 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
Scarce and collectible -- a magazine which, despite its title, refers not to the far American West, but to Ohio and surrounds. This issue is from Dec. 1886 -- Volume V, No. 2. Very nice, not commonly seen, magazine. Pages are clean as a whistle throughout. Only faults are a small piece of paper missing at both crown and tail of spine (no spine crease), one small tear to bottom rear edge, and short tears to cover at spine, front and back. The latter deficiency has been repaired with transparent archival tape and is now holding firmly. The premier article in this issue is clearly the 45 page piece covering the history and personalities of the University of Michigan. Illustrations include portraits of luminaries and smalll depictions of buildings. The article is entitled "The University of Michigan with Sketches of James Burill Angell, Corydon L. Ford, Henry Simmons Frieze, and George Edward Frothingham." The piece was written by C.W. Butterfield and A.B. Palmer, both of whom were historians of the day. Butterfield is perhaps best known for his "History of Simon Girty." Other articles include the history of boycotting, Alaska, and the refugee lands in Ohio.

981 Cadmus & Harmonia The Island of Sheep
New York Hoghton Mifflin 1920 First American Edition Hard Cover Good-plus No DJ
