1 Smith, Charles Ashton As It Is Written
Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, Donald M. Grant 1982 0937986445 / 9780937986448 First Edition Stated Hard Cover Fine Very Good Krupowicz, R.J.
Book itself is clean and bright with no bumps to boards, no names or writing, and very clean pages and page edges. Jacket has not been price-clipped and is likewise clean and attractive in brand new mylar. Faults to it are minor, a few small rubbed spots and one small tear which is practically invisible. Book is part of a limited first edition of 1250 copies of which 1200 were for sale and is SIGNED by the illustrator. The story, an "oriental fantasy", is one of the longest and earliest works by the author which had been accepted for publication by the experimental and short-lived (and today rare) pulp magazine, "Thrill Book" in 1919 shortly before it folded. The story languished for over 60 years before being offered in this edition for the first time in hard cover book form. 125 pages. Preface tells the story of how it was discovered in 1977. Its author was mentored by H.P. Lovecraft, but was primarily a fantasy poet, though he did create a small body of published fiction, of which this is a prime example. The art is gorgeous -- full page color plates and drawings.
