.A lovely copy of an important book. Paper over boards designed with same bold graphic as dustjacket -- slight browning to top edge. Former owner's last name written at upper front corner of front free endpaper. Pages very clean. Dustjacket shows a light crease to very top front edge, a very small tear to outer bottom corner and a tiny one to bottom edge near spine. Has not been price-clipped and is most handsome in brand new mylar. Measures 6-1/2"x9-1/2" Ben Shalm's beautiful graphic art adds much appeal to this slim volume of poetry which is a discourse between the poet and Anne Bradstreet, a poet of colonial America in the 1600's and the first significant female writer in the colonies. This was Berryman's break-out book and was followed in 1964 by the Pulitzer-prize winning 77 Dream Songs. Sadly, in 1972 Berryman jumped to his death from a bridge in Minneapolis where he was a professor at the University of Minnesota.Lithuanian-born Shalm is noted as a social realist painter, but was trained as a lithogrpaher and graphic artist, which is evident here. He has also done beautiful illuminated work as per the exquisite book, Ecclesiastes. Together, poet and artist, have created something special.
