Book itself is quite nice -- very clean with no names or writing and no bumping to boards. The dustjacket is likewise clean and not price-clipped, but does show wear, including a chip to upper right front corner, wear with loss of color to lower front corner, two small chips to crown of spine, wear with loss of color to very bottom of spine, a touch of wear to both back corners and a tear to lower back edge. We have protected it with brand new mylar to prevent further mishap..Kousevitsky was the world-renowned conductor of the Boston Symphony (he died in the 1950's), but this is not truly a biography. To talk about his music, is to talk about him, but the music takes precedence as the author studies the history of American symphonic music as presented in the 25 years prior to publication by Dr. Kousevitsky and the Boston Symphony. This new American music, performed also by Sopland and Bernstein, was influenced by jazz, Indian, and Black music, but also by the discovery of folklore of English origin, and the arrival in the U.S. of notable European musicians. The author discusses the scores performed by Kousevitsky from 1924-1946 and provides an analysis of him as a cultural force. 199 pages. Indexed.
