1 Whitney, Richard Short Selling
1931 Soft Cover Fine Wraps, Near Fine
An Address Delivered by Richard Whitney President of the New York Stock Exchange Before the Hartford Chamber of Commerce, Hartford Connecticut, and over the Nationwide Network of the Columbia Broadcasting System Inc., October 16, 1931. We are pleased to offer this very scarce speech delivered by the infamous Richard Whitney, the man who in 1929 was lauded as a hero during the Stock Market Crash, elected president of the New York Stock Exchange in 1930 and in 1938 was led away in handcuffs to Sing Sing while 6000 onlookers crowded Grand Central Station to witness the spectacle.Whitney was convicted of embezzlement, the result of years of speculative trading that left him so deeply in debt that he turned to embezzlement. Not only did he steal from the New York Stock Exchange, but also from both the New York Yacht Club, of which he served as treasurer, and his father-in law's estate. He served less than four years and after his release lived quietly until his death in 1974.The speech is printed on heavy cream paper and there is a laid-in slip which reads "Compliments of Richard Whitney, President New York Stock Exchange." There is no toning to pages and no fault of any kind. Plain grey wrappers show small crease to upper rear corner and a very superficial one to upper front. 20 pages of text.
