a beautiful rebind -- cover in fine condition with an overall clean and nice text with only minor foxing scattered lightly. Two previous owner bookplates have been removed from original and placed again here on the front pastedown. The lower one is contemporary, but the one on top reads Earl of Brandon. a title in the Irish Peerage. It was created for Francis Bernard who was elected a peer in 1800, a year before this book was printed. He was followed by the Second Earl of Brandon, James Bernard, in 1835. The Earl of Brandon lived at Castle Bernard in County Cork which today is a ruin due to damage from the IRA in 1921. The book itself shows paisley exterior page edges and has several nice fold-outs at back. 398 pages.

An architectural history and a history of the owners of these lost homes. Some have fallen in ruins, other have become hotels, homes for the elderly etc. But seven are still in private hands and are being lived in. The stories of each -- and there are 25 in all -- shadow the changes in society and economics.

It measures 4-1/2"x7" and the cover art was rendered by Fergus O'Ryan. The booklet was likely made for the tourist trade as many of the ads are for hotels, bars, and various travel aids. The stories include, but aren't limited to: the origin of the Killarney Lakes, the legend of Muckross Abbey, O'Donaghue and the Devil; Fionn MacCumhal and the Welsh Giant, Tom Coghlan and the Leprechaun, The Maid of Ross, and The Sage of Innesfallen. 20 stories in all. 44 pages, plus ads at back. Clean as a whistle with just a tiny tear to side edge of back cover repaired by me with a tiny piece of archival tape.
