Creatures of the Spirit; Robert Vickrey's Nun Paintings, Miller, Donald
12 Miller, Donald Creatures of the Spirit; Robert Vickrey's Nun Paintings
Ripe Tomato Press 2002 0972129405 / 9780972129404 Hard Cover Fine Fine 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
Crisp and clean inside and out. Has not been price-clipped and dustjacket protected by brand new mylar cover. No names ro writing, no bumps to boards, no tears or chips. Measures 10-1/2" across and 10" high. Robert Vickrey's nuns are classically attired, but their depictions are, as the artist himself states, rendered with lyrical realism. His focus is on the head covering of the habits of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul -- the white wing-like form known as the cornette. Though the cornette is no longer worn in the modern world, it appears here in multiple creative ways. Vickrey is a master at the very old technique of egg tempura and this is what he has employed. Accompanying the paintings is a text about Vickrey, the Order's founding in Paris in 1633, and the evolution of its distinctive habit. Vickrey has painted numerous covers for TIME magazine. 98 pages.

The Signet Magazine of the Federated Alumnae of the Sacred Heart in the United States and Canada 1925 (Saint Magdalena Sophia), Multiple Authors
13 Multiple Authors The Signet Magazine of the Federated Alumnae of the Sacred Heart in the United States and Canada 1925 (Saint Magdalena Sophia)
New York Alumnae of the Sacred Heart 1925 Vol. VI No. 1 Soft Cover Good-plus
Oddly enough, this is a rather hard to find magazine even though it encompassed alumni from all the federation's colleges in the United States and Canada. The magazine was published just twice a year. There are two ads at front, a color one for Gorham Silver and a rather plain one for Tiffany's. All others ads are at the back. This issue devotes a great many pages to "our saint", Saint Magdalena Sophia. Articles cover her sainthood, her life, her visit to Reidenberg, her life as an educator, and her supplementary works. Other articles include memoirs, a trip to Arcadie, the lost art of letter writing and more. There are also poems and a hymn about the saint. Magazine measures 7"x10" and has 117 pages minus ads. It's very clean and tightly bound with fault only at back cover. It appears that the upper corner was creased at one time and eventually snapped off. There is also a loss of the outer layer of paper where you see the light spots.

Our Lady of Lourdes Church Dedication February 11, 1982 (Florida), No Author Stated
14 No Author Stated Our Lady of Lourdes Church Dedication February 11, 1982 (Florida)
Florida Our Lady of Lourdes Church 1981 Soft Cover Very Good 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
Very nice, clean booklet commemorating the dedication of the new Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Only fault is a flat crease to lower front corner of cover. Oddly, there is no reference to the exact town in Florida where it's located, but there is a photo of the presiding Bishop of Orlando, Thomas J. Grady. This is an exceptional keepsake thanks to the many photographs, including some in full color, plus lots of photos of the parishioners in action. There's also history and a roster of the patrons who helped make the new church possible. As always with these momentos, there are ads at the back of the book, but they aren't overwhelming. Some of these have more ads than content but this isn't one of them. Book measures 8-1/2" x 11".

April 9, 1961 was the day the new Catholic church building, St. Therese Little Flower of Jesus, was dedicated in Cincinnati, Ohio. The booklet serves as a souvenir and is quite substantial with much history and information about the church from its simple beginning in 1926 to its lovely new location. It also offers many photographs of parishioners and clergy, as well as the nuns who worked at the school. As is the norm, there are also ads which helped finance the book, but some these of these are from the designers and artisans who made it happen. There is also an extensive list of patrons and other names of those with ties to the new church. Among them are Rev. Edwin J. Hamann, Donald Brandt, and George Gohs. Booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11" and is clean and tightly bound with no names or writing.

Book is clean and well kept with only some toning to back and spine of jacket and one tiny tear to top back edge. Dustjacket is handsome in brand new mylar. No price clip and no names or writing. A scarce little book which explains the path to the Catholic convent and to Sisterhood at the beginning. of the 1950's. 20 SEPPELT, F.X. and K. LÖFFLER De Geschiedenis Der Pausen
Maastricht Leiter-Nypels 1939 No Edition Stated Half-Leather Good-plus No DJ, as Issued
Very handsome book which appears to be written in the Dutch language. Boards are half leather with marbeled paper and matching marbled endpapesr. Gilt to top page edges. Wear to leather at all extremities, but book is very clean and tightly bound with two interesting inscriptions. Unfortunately, we have no idea what they say, but the first appears on the half title page and is dated 1944. The second is on the full title page, across from which is a photograph of Pope Pius XII, and dated 1941. The first two words, likely a name, are very close in proximity to the LN logo of the publisher and bear the very same initials. Also, laid into the book is a souvenir postcard bearing an artist's rendering of Pop Pius XII in full color profile, sent as a souvenir to Holland from the Vatican with Vatican postmark and a stamp also bearing Pius XII's image. This is dated 1947. Text is comprised of two books, one written by each author. 811 pages. Indexed. Illustrated profusedly with photos and art in black and white.
