3 Blavatsky, Helen (Founder) The Theosophical Quarterly Volume XXXV, Nos. 137,138,139,140 Full Run 1937-38)
New York The Theosphical Society 1937 Soft Cover Very Good
Published in 1937-38. Full set in good, clean condition with only one issue showing a fault which is a small bit of chipping to upper front corner of the cover just above the No. 140 on one issue. All magazines have clean pages made from very nice rag paper with no writing and no creases. The Theosophical Society was founded by Madame Helena Blavatsky, the first Russian woman to be naturalized as an American citizen. She began the group in 1875 with other like-minded friends and eventually moved to India where she started yet another branch. By the 1930's the society was going strong, despite some splintering after Madame Blavatsky's death in 1891. In fact, it was even popular in Ireland. Devotees of James Joyce's novel, Finnegan's Wake, will recognize Theosophical Society influences in the book. Among the topics here are cyclic laws in biology, prayer wheels, the importance of having a life purpose, psychic and noetic action, and a two-part series on Blavatsky herself. Not often seen in a full run.

Direct Healing (New Thought, 1916), Ellsworth, Paul
8 Ellsworth, Paul Direct Healing (New Thought, 1916)
Holyoke, Massachusetts The Elizabeth Towne Company 1916 Later Printing Hard Cover Good No DJ
Book was copyrighted in 1914 and published here in 1916. It's a hard one to find in the early green cloth binding. Book does have some faults -- a few light spots to the back, wear to top and bottom of spine, and spotting on a few pages. There is a blank bookplate on the front pastedown with no name (very fitting for the type of book), a stamp (faded) that shows a name from a former owner and a penciled note at top of front free endpaper from another previous owner which includes his name and this message, "Purchased October 3, 1970 at "Acres of Books" Long Beach, California." Having said all that, the book is tightly bound with no wobbling to spine and is overall clean. The author has written many books about New Thought philosophy, which is based in Christianity. The publisher, Elizabeth Towne, also published a New Thought magazine called Nautilus which ran continuously until 1953 when at age 88 she deemed herself too old to continue. Book measure 5-1/4"x7-1/2" and has 173 pages. Concerns healing in all aspects of life.

The Social Contract and The Discourses (Everyman's Library 162)), Jean-Jacques Rousseau
11 Jean-Jacques Rousseau The Social Contract and The Discourses (Everyman's Library 162))
New York Everyman's Library (Knopf) 1993 0679423028 / 9780679423027 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good No DJ
Beautiful book bound in hunter green cloth with an elegant title box on both spine and face. Pages are tightly bound and are clean and without creasing and writing. The only fault is a loss of color on the black spine box at the bottom which I saw only after taking a photo with a flash. The book measures 5-1/4" x 8-1/2" and has 409 pages including index. Book opens with Discourses on the Arts and Sciences, the Origin of Inequality, and Political Economy, followed by The General Society of the Human Race. The rest of the text is in four "books". I did, however, find a poem printed by hand in pencil on the back pastedown. I can remove it with a document pad if desired. just ask and I will. I feft it at this point because I like this sort of thing if it's discreet, which it is.

13 Kingsley, Charles Hypatia; New Foes with an Old Face
Rand McNally Reprint Hard Cover Very Good No DJ
Book is very handsome in with clean boards and pages and no crackimgto hinges.Top edge is gilded and binding is strong. Only fault is a a bit of fading to dark brown diagonal at open edge of bront board. Book is not dated, but former owner wrote her name and dated it 1901 on the front free endpaper. The author of The Water Babies, turns his hand here to an historic novel for adults, penned in 1853 as a fictionalized account of the life of the philosopher Hypatia,. Though very popular in its day, it has a strong anti-Catholic bias and also gives voice to its author's racial prejudice which was not cuncommon during the period..418 pages.
