New York, New York The Music School Settlement 1949 Soft Cover Very Good
Clean, atrractive booklet measuring 6"x8-3/4". Plain tan wraps printed in black ink at face. Only fault is small spot at top front. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Third Street Music School Settlement, the nation's oldest community music school, was founded in 1894 by Emilie Wagner to provide pleasure and instruction to impoverished immigrants of New York's Lower East Side. It continues today. Here we have a booklet explaining the program and its offerings for the 1949-50 school year for both adults and children. In addition to instrument lessons, there were voice, opera, rhythmic dancing and children's music appreciation courses. Inside the back cover and continuing over to the back itself are time slots with penciled names and the age of each child, ranging from three to nine. Could be erased, but an interesting adjunct to the text. 16 pages.

Book is very clean and attractive and has not been price-clipped and has no names or writing.. The gold medallion on the front cover is to celebrate the Charles W. Follett Award which was won by the author for this book. The book has nice art rendered in red against the grey cover and the top edge of the book is inked pink as per design. The colorful dustjacket is very good with just a few tiny tears, a little rubbing to top and bottom of jacket spine, and a small bit of wear to the corners, again to the dustjacket. This is a story of a Jewish family living in the tenements of the lower East Side of Manhattan. I remember this book well from chilhdhood -and never forgot the five little girls and their rich Jewish culture. To this day I remember the various Jewish holidays and what they're for and how they are celebrated. This is the first book of what would become a series. Book measures 8" x 9-1/2" and has189 pages which are illustrated with drawings throughout. Not often seen.
