Bromfield won the Pulitzer prize for this title when it debuted in 1937. This, however, is a reprint by Grosset & Dunlap. What's unusual is the fact that this reprint was SIGNED by Bromfield on the half title page thus, "With best wishes, Louis Bromfield." No names. Book is lacking dustjacket, but inspite of that is still quite nice with beveled boards and a large gold title box on spine. Book is tightly bound and clean. It measures 5-1/4" x 8-1/2" with 597 pages. Handsome vintage bookplate on front pastedown (see pohoto).

Very clean attractive magazine presented newspaper-style and geared to women. It's quite large, though folded in the middle and has no mailing label. There's a bit of toning at the fold and several small edge tears which have been pressed and, if s9ignificant, repaired with archival tape. Measures 11-1/2"x16-1/2" with 16 dense pages. One of the most interesting stories is a first person account entitled "How We Spent Christmas Day in India" with accompanying drawings. Other topics include winter bonnets (hence the cover girl),the occupations of women college graduates, rich and spicy foods, old English dances and several pieces devoted to New Year's. Many ads at back which are also great fun to read. -

Original box of booklets came to previous owner via the Government of India Tourist Office in Chicago. They were printed and disseminated to promote the Festival of India in the United States during 1985 and 1986. Titles are: The Master Weavers; An Introduction to Handcrafted Textiles of India; Master Craftsmen, An Introduction to Crafts in India; The Splendour of Indian Silk; Know India -- Architecure; Know India -- Civilization; Know India -- Cities; Know India -- Classical Music; Know India -- Cuisine; Know India -- Dance; Know India -- Fairs and Festivals; Know India -- Sculpture and Painting; and Know India -- Wilife. Each booklet sports a glossy cover and contains 24 pages with color photographs and text. The box bears a taped-on page indicating that ts contente were given with the compliments of Sat.D. Kira Manager, Government of India Tourist Office, Chicago. All booklets in excellent confition. Box is a little tattered and has been taped at upper area at back and complimentary sheet at front shows foxing to edges and at tape. Overall very nice and a hard to find momento of the Festival.

Contents include 10 articles on various aspects of the topic written by several authors. The focus is on the impact of British rule, the response to it, and the internalization of the populace.314 pages.
