On Book Design and Printing in the Twentieth Century, Blumenthal, Joseph
2 Blumenthal, Joseph On Book Design and Printing in the Twentieth Century
New Yotk The Spiral Press 1965 Limited Edition Soft Cover Fine Fine
Very elegant booklet, designed with a simple beauty. Only 400 of these ran off the press in 1965, so they aren't turning up everywhere. What caught my attention is how relevant the subject is in today's resurgence of fine presses and small-run books and booklets. Blumenthal was the founder of The Spiral Press, a historian, a designer, and a fine printer. The booklet has a white card cover and its own grey dustjacket, both of which are pristine. It measures 5-1/4"x8" and has 19 pages of text. This is a wonderful addition to a collection of books about books.

The Power of Print in American History 1776-1976, No Author Stated
5 No Author Stated The Power of Print in American History 1776-1976
New York, New York St. Regis Paper Company 1976 First Edition Soft Cover in Wooden Box Very Good No DJ
This item was created by the St. Regis Paper Company as a Bicentennial keepsake. The previous owner kept it beautifully -- everything is bright and crisp.. The first photo shows the wooden clamshell box covered with a linen-like fabric. Inside are nine booklets -- one of which bears the name on the box cover, plus these: Ben Franklin and the Colonial Printing Industry; Propaganda for the American Revolution; William Penn and American Cities; Equal Rights and Democracy; Medicine in America; Selling the West; Newspapers and Public Opinion; the Growth Business; and Magazine Journalism and the American Lifestyle. Also included is a fold-out titled The Common Press; A Brief History Description & Instructions for Operation of the Original Printer, plus the print which is rolled and tied with a red ribbon, a color print titled the Unhappy Sufferers, whcih was sold by Paul Revere. At the bottom of the box there even more items -- a letter from William Penn; a large color folded map of California's Cold Regions, two handbills, a tri-fold about advertising and merchandising in the early days of mass distribution , and a fold-out poster advertising Henry & Johnson Linament. Altogether a lovely thing. Very giftable.

Contemporary Printmaking in Japan, Robertson, Ronald G.
6 Robertson, Ronald G. Contemporary Printmaking in Japan
New York Crown Publlishers Inc. 1965 Ptesumed First Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
Book is very nice and has a lot of information on making prints. There are many black and white instructional photographs, showing six leading Japanese artists sharing their wood-block techniques. Therir work is also covered in a compilation of 170 prints, 35 in color. The book's not showy on the outside, but it's a gem inside. The one aesthetic is the beautiful blue textural cloth binding. The book measures 8-1/4" x 9-1/2" and has 120 pages. The jacket has one small tear to the top front edge with creasing to the torn piece which I laid flat and put the jacket in a brand new mylar in which the defect is barely noticeable.
