Very crisp, clean, beautiful books. Volume II shows a small abrasion from a former price ticker to front, but is otherwise without fault. Covers, pages, and page edges pristine. These are scarce and important books developed as part of the Seneca Curriculum Project in New York State to give voice to the tribal elders of the Indians of New York. Both books provide much material for understanding the culture and the history of the time, but volume II is especially interesting in that it zeroes in on the experiences of school children attending Caucasian schools during the early part of thr 20th century. Photo of each contributor, plus maps and drawings. Volume I is a first edition, volume II a second. 534 collective pages.

Book is clean and tightly bound, but does show wear to crown and tail of spine including a small piece missing at crown. Hinges are tight, but back one shows a repair made with Japan paper similar in color to endpapers. Hinge is strong and tight, but you can see cracking to pages through repair paper (see photo). Silver ornamentation is bright on both face and spine and there are no names or writing. Book provides a detailed history of New York City's China Town during the last decade of the 19th century. Text is plentiful and detailed and is augmented by both both small black and white photos and drawings of daily life.The author covers quite a few topics including governance, the Chinese restaurants and laundries, the seclusion of women, family life, music, opium smoking (includes a detailed drawing of the apparatus), playing fan-tan, Chinese lotteries, prostitution, slave girls, Chinese funerals, Chinese cemeteries and much more. A fascinating book of 329 pages.

Book is copyrighted 1905, but no further publishing information is indicated. However, inscription by Dr. Ramon Reyes Lala (Filipino author, lecturer) at front free endpaper is dated 1911. It reads thus: "To Mr. ------, With sincere regards and best wishes, Dr. Ramon Reyes Lala of Manila P.I. New York, May 15th, 1911." The edition was named after Dr. Lala -- see photo three for his likeness. The book is clean and tightly bound with a gilded top edge and pictorial cover. There is a small bit of wear to cloth at top of spine and darkening to spine, but overall the book is quite nice. Many photographs throughout and a portrait of William H. Taft at frontis. Told from first person POV, but much information about the Philippines and its people is woven into the narrative. 416 pages. Indexed.
