8 Barry, Philip The Philadephia Story Starring Katherine Hepburn Theatre Guild Program
New York The Theatre Guild 1939 Soft Covr Very Good 4to - over 9" - 12" tall
What fun to have a program from the 1939 hit stage play, The Philadelphia Story, starring the elegant Katherine Hepburn. Not only is there a long interview with the leading lady, but also lots of wonderful photos from the show, an article about its author, Philip Barry, and another about its director, Robert Sinclair. Also fun to check out are the bios of the cast members who include such noteables as Shirley Booth, who later became known for her TV role as Hazel the maid; Van Heflin and Joseph Cotten. The program measures 9"x12" and is very clean and well bound. There is a small bit of wear to upper left corner near spine and a light fade to outer front edge. Program was lightly folded by its former owner -- most likely the night of the play. The back cover with its cartoony art offers praise by the reviewers.Walter Winchell wrote this: "New Yorchids: Katherine Hepburn's new hit "Philadelphia Story' -- the best comedy in town. A delightfully amusing and refreshing show, blessed, too, with an exceptionally good troupe of entertainers, besides the electric Hepburn."

9 Barry. Philip The Playbill for the St. James Theatre Without Love, 1942 Katharine Hepburn)
New York Playbill Inc. 1942 Soft Cover Very Good
What a great cover graced by a photo of the beautiful Katharine Hepburn and Elliott Nugent who starred in the play "Without Love", a new comedy by Philip Barry. The Playbill was for the week of December 6, 1942. Lots of Christmas ads in this one, the best of which is a two page spread for Camel cigarettes and Prince Albert tobacco. Program measures 7" x 9-1/2" and has 44 pages. Only real fault is small dampstain on the lower margin of the back cover and a small closed tear to front. Overall nice. There also much to read in Paybills while waiting for the curtain.

Very nice, clean atreactive book with no defect of note. No names or writing other than that of author who SIGNED and inscribed it on front free endpaper thus, "January, 2004. For --- and ----, with much love, Neil." An unusual topic chosen by the author because he shares critic (1930's) Alfred Polgar's fascination with theater scandals. A trendous amount of reseach ensued. 228 pages. Indexed.

11 Blackman, Susan (editor) Mattress Factory: Installation and Performance, 1982-1989
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Mattress Factory Ltd 1991 0962329002 / 9780962329005 Soft Cover Near Fine 4to - over 9" - 12" tall
Crisp, clean , beautiful book which appears almost as new. The only fault is tiny spots of edge wear, otherwise it has a tight binding with no creases to spine and pristine pages and page edges. There are also no names or writing. Book measures 8-1/2" x 10-1/2 with 223 pages. This is a very t unusual art book, but it's also quirky, interesting, and fascinating. The title comes from a Pittsburgh building where mattresses had been made at the turn of the 20th century. In 1975 the buildng came alive and in 1977 artists rented studios .The exhbitions came in 1982 titled Factory Installations and eventually met with Performance Art as well. The book has much info on the artists and there is an abundance of photographs printed on quality coated paper.I loved this book at first sight-- first, because I had no idea what it was about and secondly, because it's not only contemporary art, but a chance to expolore the artists thoughts.

16 Danforth, Roger T. The Cleveland Play House 1915-1990; 75th Anniversary
Emerson Press 1990 Soft Cover Near Fine Oblong
Very clean and surprisingly hard to find booklet published on the occasion of the Cleveland Play House's 75th Anniversary celebration in 1990. Measures 8-1/2" tall and 11" across and is printed on quality coated paper. Amply illustrated with black and white photographs, many of them stills from the plays. There are also photos of the buildings, one of Tennessee Williams, and a great one showing a busload of actors with a sign on the side of the bus that reads "Cleveland Play House Touring Repertory Company". In addition to the history of the Play House, the spotlight shines on the various artistic directors and their eras from Raymond O'Neil (1916-1921) to Josephine R. Abady who began in 1988 and was the current director at time of publication. Also, interesting is the section which lists the many new plays which premiered at the Play House, including "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds" 1969-70, the most honored play in Cleveland Play House history which won Best American Play, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Drama Critics Circle Award, Obie Award, Drama Desk Award and selected for The Best Plays of 1969-70. The last section discusses the various buildings from which the Cleveland Pay house operated. A nice piece of Cleveland memorabilia.

This is an exquisite book which needs no words to describe it. Rather than a static photograph, however beautiful, the ethereal quality of these pictures capture the grace of both dance.and dancer. There is no text to the main body of the work, but the image against back paper is very compelling. At the front the phoographer says this, "Dancessence: the pure art of feminine dance, and the exqusite sculpture of its instrument; soft strong, subtle, fluid, cursive, rhythmic, elegant. i.e. fermale." Book is soft cover with a dustjacket which ocmpletely covers it, including the reverse sides of the cover. Book closes with a magnet. Measures 9"x11-1/2"
