1 The Melish Case; Challenge to the Church
Brooklyn, New York The Melish Defense Committee Soft Cover Very Good
Nice copy, clean and tightly bound. Retains pledge sheet and envelope for remitting money to the Defense Committe. Small bit of staining around staples and light soil to back -- overall quite good with pristine pages. A 64 page report on the famous case involving Rev. John Howard Melish, who had been rector at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity in Brooklyn Heights, New York for 45 years before being ousted due to the leftist leanings of his son and associate rector, Rev. William Howard Melish. A major thrust of the defense was that the Church had insinuated itself into the relationship between the congregation and their clergy. There is no date on the booklet, but the hoopla occurred during the "red scare" and the height of McCarthyism.

7 Blavatsky, Helen (Founder) The Theosophical Quarterly Volume XXXV, Nos. 137,138,139,140 Full Run 1937-38)
New York The Theosphical Society 1937 Soft Cover Very Good
Published in 1937-38. Full set in good, clean condition with only one issue showing a fault which is a small bit of chipping to upper front corner of the cover just above the No. 140 on one issue. All magazines have clean pages made from very nice rag paper with no writing and no creases. The Theosophical Society was founded by Madame Helena Blavatsky, the first Russian woman to be naturalized as an American citizen. She began the group in 1875 with other like-minded friends and eventually moved to India where she started yet another branch. By the 1930's the society was going strong, despite some splintering after Madame Blavatsky's death in 1891. In fact, it was even popular in Ireland. Devotees of James Joyce's novel, Finnegan's Wake, will recognize Theosophical Society influences in the book. Among the topics here are cyclic laws in biology, prayer wheels, the importance of having a life purpose, psychic and noetic action, and a two-part series on Blavatsky herself. Not often seen in a full run.
