If you admire the three cookbooks written by Ashbrook, this self-published volume compiled to celebrate her 95th birthday in 2000 is a rare treat. Not only does she serve up recipes and culinary, essays, but also a couple stories and many, many memories of almost a century -- all with a delightful style and a touch of humor. Book measures 8-3/4"x11" and is unpaginated, but quite hefty and great fun. A very special and limited volume in search of the right home.

There are lots of books that pay homage to grandma who came from Italy or Ireland, or wherever, with a pocketful of recipes. But this book focuses on the Saska and Blachut families from Poland and the Crain family from Pennsyvania. It also follows the families forward. Not only are there recipes, but lots of family stories and photos of many people. The book is very clean and nice, but it has a couple peculiar lines of tiny dashes on the front cover. The boards are actually a dark blue, but I had to use the flash so you could see them. For the right person this one's a treasure. 463 pages and measures 7" x 10".

Very handsome cookbook which we haven't seen for years. It was published to raise money for the hospitals in Cleveland with the help of Chef Wolfgang Puck. The book is nicely designed with a spiral binding which remains intact and heavy plastic "boards" which protect the pictorial card cover. The book mesures 8" x 10" and has 256 pages. The cover art is a surprise though. Open the plastic cover and you see that the food graphic is not printed on the blue cover -- it's a die-cut that can also be moved. This motif follows even inside the book as a marker for a new category of recipes. Among the five star recipes are roasted red pepper soup, garden lasange, crusty sauted scallops with black olive viniagrette, pesto-stuffed chicken breasts, satay grilled pork chops, and choclate creme brulee. Nice enough to be a gift.

This is a lovely cookbook with very good recipes -- not the same old, same old. The book is SIGNED by the author who was also Executive Chef for the Governor's residence. Neither signers inscribed, so no names. The chef signed thus, "Cook with Joy! June, McCarthy". First Lady Hope Taft wrote this: Enjoy! First Lady, Hope Taft, 16, Nov. 2006." The Tafts lived in the mansion from 1999-2007. Chapters cover appetizers, vegetables and grains, main dishes, lunches and teas, salads and vinagrettes, breads and breakfasts, soups and desserts. The book also has photographs of the governors and their families after Taft. Inside there is also a brochure which offers the history of this beautiful and historic home and garden. Book measures 7" x 10" and has 145 pages including index. Nice gift item.

But the best may be the funniest -- Bo's Chicken and Luke's Better Than Bo's Chicken!
