Christmas on the Isthmus, Core, Sue
2 Core, Sue Christmas on the Isthmus
Dobb's Ferry, New York Claremont Press 1935 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good No DJ Oblong McKeown, Anne Cordts
Book is clean and tightly bound with no names or writing. No dustjacket, but boards are cute and Christmas green. Looks like a children's book, but upon closer inspection proves to be a humorous take-off on Clement Moore's famous "The Night Before Christmas" -- with a few winks for grown-ups! The color and fabric of a Panamanian holiday shines through, as do the Panamanian people from the lottery vendors and C.Z. police to the commissary vendors and soldiers and sailors. Even the cockroaches and termites get a nod! This WAS 1935 though, so don't expect it to be P.C.. Nonetheless it's good natured fun from an author who clearly loved the area and wrote several other books about it. Here's a sample of her sly verse,"The women you say? W-e-l-l, Santa, you know. That women's clothes always are funny; Down there what they wear wouldn't smother a flea, Which is plain to be seen -- when it's sunny!"

An Anthology of Christmas Prose and Verse, Kellerher, D. L.
4 Kellerher, D. L. An Anthology of Christmas Prose and Verse
Great Britain Cresset Press Ltd. 1928 First Edition Hard Cover Good No DJ as issued in This Format 4to - over 9" - 12" tall
An uncommon book with an excellent interior and a good-to-fair exterior, the latter due to a cloth binding of a type of which cannot be easily cleaned. Consequently, there is light overall soil, a few small spots to upper front corner and a bit of darkening in the same area, as well to the spine which also shows a small tear at both top and bottom. The book is lovely inside, however -- very clean pages and exceptionally nice, heavy paper. The star of the show is definitely the wood engraving on page 203 by Celia Fiennes who studied the art under Noel Rooke in the 1920's. Collection of English Christmas material is likewise good and includes selections from Washington Irving, Dickens, George Eliot, Shakespeare, Thackeray, Coleridge, Thomas Hardy and Violet Sackville-West among many other luminaries. There's even info on conjuring fairies. Book measures 8-1/4"x11" and has 231 pages. Former owne's name and location (Chicago) is dated 1931 on front free endpaper.

5 Long, Harry P. Childhood Joys; Stories, Pictures and Verses for Little Ones
Columbus, Ohio The Book Concern Hard Cover Very Good No DJ, as Issued
Enchanting cover art in bold primarly colors shows four children looking out a window at the snowy night with a church in the distance. There's no date, but the previous small owner (thankfully) wrote his name and the year 1925 on the top of the front free endpaper. Book is clean as a whistle and tightly bound. Faults include cormer wear, some edge chipping and rubbing to cloth of spine. Filled with drawings, stories and poems, many of which are Christmas themed. Other topics include the love of God and mothers, a room of one's own, country life, and the importance of kindness, but also of fun. A wee charmer measuring 6-1/2"x9" with 64 pages. Scarce.

Fortune Magazine December 1934, Luce, Henry R. (editor)
6 Luce, Henry R. (editor) Fortune Magazine December 1934
New York Time-Life 1934 Volume X, Number Six Soft Cover Very Good Folio - over 12" - 15" tall
The Christmas issue of Fortune Magazine always sported a particularly beautiful cover. What adds to the impression though is the size of the magazine at 11-1/2" x 14". Everything is clean and nice, but there are a few defects -- a few small isolated spots of edge wear to cover, a small bit of foxing to bottom of contents page (see photo) and a bit of the same to the spine side of back cover (again, see photo). The articles this time include: Washington D.C., The Federal Budget (A Guide to U.S. Spending), The Dutch Throne, DuPont, Illuminated Manuscripts, The House of Steinway (pianos), and The Diesel Engine.

A Visit to Santa Claus, No author Stated
7 No author Stated A Visit to Santa Claus
Rochesterm New York Strecher Lithographic Co. 1917 Soft Cover Good-plus Price, Margaret Evans
This is a charming little book, the kind that small people are wont to "decorate" and/or relieve of its pages. Fortunately, all pages are here and there is no scribbling. The story is cute, but the art of Margaret Evans Price is the show stealer. An interesting sideline is this fact -- while being am illustrator, Evans and her husband were creating a toy company known to this day as Fisher-Price. The booklet measures 7-1/2" x 10-1/2" and has just 14 counted pages. Every other page is either in full color or in blue and orange. The booklet measures 7-1/2"x10-1/2".

This oversized magazine (11-1/2" x 16-1/2") is gorgeous and so gently kept it's amazing. The little sticker you see on the front is the mailing label.
