4 Dudley, Clara The Use of Wide-Seamless Carpet in Decoration
New York, New York Alexander Smith Rugs and Carpets 1931 No Edition Stated Soft Cover Very Good Folio - over 12" - 15" tall
Very uncommon piece of ephemera in excellent condition. Covers and pages of this oversized piece are clean as a whistle inside and out. Glasscine overwrap has a diagonal crease to bottom front corner, a thin line of browning from top to bottom at front and at rear a few tiny edgetears. Beautfully illustrated with color renderings of rooms -- also includes a color chart with 18 hues and suggestions for their use. This is an important piece, as Alexander Smith & Sons by 1929 was the largest carpet company in the world, famous for its innovative techniques that made carpeting affordable to the middle class. The company began in 1845 in West Farms, New York and merged with Mohawk in 1956. An interesting sidebar is the fact that Alexander Smith himself was elected to Congress in 1878, but died the evening of his election day. Piece is unpaginated, but we counted 10 large pages.

Collectors and interior designers will find this one most interesting and enlightening as the entire book drills down on the contributions of two people, Gustave and Christian Herter, who fled their native Germany, Gustave in 1848, Christian in 1875, to set up shop in the United States. As early as 1858 Gustave was selling furniture to the White House. This is an antique lover's dream book because of the intense concentration on one facet of antique furniture and design during the Gilded Age.It is the first book to focus squarely on the Herters and augments its massive amount of information with 133 color photographs and 167 black and white.Theirs is the stuff of which the American elite -- J. Pierpont Morgan and William Vanderbilt -- sought to furnish their homes. But they didn't stop with just furniture when the he Herter Brothers could provide so much more -- woodwork, fancy plasterwork, lighting fixtures, window treatments, carpets, textiles, stained glass and decorative accessories. The book has no names or writing, no bumps to boards, and no tears or chips. It will arrive in brand new protective mylar. It measures 9"x11-1/4" and has 272 pages.
