The Modern Priscilla Magazine February 1919, Bayha, Edwin
1 Bayha, Edwin The Modern Priscilla Magazine February 1919
Boston, MA The Modern Priscilla Co. 1919 Soft Cover Very Good Folio - over 12" - 15" tall Bayha, Edwin
The cover graphic by Edwin F. Bayha is fabulous on this early issue of Modern Priscilla magazine, a leading needlework periodical. Note that the woman is standing out in the snow to read her letter -- the clue to whom it might be from is the blue star in the window. A touching reminder that WWI raged. The magazine shows a vertical light crease down the middle which likely incurred when inserted into the mailbox. Three short tears, one on each page at back, were repaired by me with archival tape that does not brown and is virtually invisible. Magazine is oversized at 10"x13-3/4". In addition to the color art on the front cover, there's a color ad at back cover for Argo cornstarch, one for Jell-o on the reverse, and one for Cream of Wheat on reverse of front cover with African-American interest. Many articles with instructions for making beautiful things, including lingerie. The best story though is one about a male trolley conductor who made filet lace.

New York Crowell Publishing Company 1939 Vol. LXVI No. 10 Soft Cover Very Good Folio - over 12" - 15" tall
This popular magazine, oversized at almost 14" tall, is still fun to read, not just for the great ads, fashions, decorating and recipes, but also for the fiction and articles. A spiffy young woman in a red and black suit with matching hat shops for just the right thread on the cover of this issue which contains great period ads for Armstrong linoleum floors, Sqibb's cod liver oil, Yardley's English Lavender, and Coty patterns, to name a few. There's also a wonderful fashion section in color and articles on copeprative living in college and preventive psychology and lots of romantic fiction. But the big name in this issue is that of Janet Flanner, the American journalist who was living in Paris at the time and part of the expatriate generation. Here she contriobutes an article about the various clases of English girls -- one on Parisian girls was forthcoming. Pictorial Review Magazine July, 1931 (Dolly Dingle, Herbert Hoover), Hoover, Herbert
8 Hoover, Herbert Pictorial Review Magazine July, 1931 (Dolly Dingle, Herbert Hoover)
New York Pictorial Review Company 1931 Volume XXXII, Number 10 Soft Cover Very Good Folio
The beautiful summer cover painted by McClelland Barclay Isets just the right tone for the pages of summer fashions inside. Barclay was best known as a pin-up artist, but he did a lot of commercial advertising work too. The best thing about this issue though is the intact page of Dolly Dingle paper dolls, totally pristine and uncut. Also, of interest is an article about Herbert Hoover in the role of grandfather. The magazine is clean and tightly bound measuring 10-1/2"x14". Mailing label to bottom front and a few small, light water spots to edges only faults Overall very handsome.

Coast to Coast Fashion Awards By the E.F. MacDonald Company, No Author
12 No Author Coast to Coast Fashion Awards By the E.F. MacDonald Company
Dayton, Ohio E.F. MacDonald Company 1962 Soft Cover Fine 4to - over 9" - 12" tall
This oversized catalogue is a monument to 60's clothing for men, women and children. It's clean as a whistle inside and out and measures 12" square. The photography is much more interesting than usual, as in addition to the regular shots of models, there are many large full color plates of vignettes where people are modeling the clothes against colorful backgrounds. Initially I thought this was a retail outlet, but it is not. E.F. MacDonald was an incentive company associated most commonly with Plaid Stamps. This catalog, however, makes no reference to stamps. Each item bears a number, but there are no prices and no stamp requirements stated. It seems likely that there must have been a correlating sheet laid-in with info telling how many books of stamps were needed.Unpaginated, but I counted 31.
