1862 Johnson's Map Washington and Oregon, Johnson, Alvin
4 Johnson, Alvin 1862 Johnson's Map Washington and Oregon
Unknown Location Johnson and Ward 1863 Likely Later Printing Circa 1863. Not Bound Very Good
The 1862 map of the territories of Washington and Oregon is a lovely thing with its hand coloring and handsome double face font for lettering. If you look in the lower corner you see the number 57 which indicates it was the 57th plate in Alvin J. Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas published originally by Johnson and Browning in 1862. The question is when was this particular one printed? It states on the map that the publisher was Johnston and Ward which means it's around 1863, as that's the year the company's name changed from Jphnson and Browning. The map was made at the start of the Civil War with much land. especially in eastern Oregon. not settled, but you can also pick out sites such as Mt. Ranier and Fremont's Peak among others, plus you can see the route proposal for the Pacific Railroad. The map measures roughly 13" x 17". It's a guess though because it's been professionally double matted and that's all I can see of it. Only faults are a dark spot to upper right corner and a small surface mar to mat at about 3-1/2" down from the top left. There is small thin indentation next to it on the map itself, but the paper is not torn. The map including matting measures 18" x 22".

5 Lambert, Fred R. Bygone Days of the Old West (Publisher's Leaflet laid-in)
Kansas City. Mo. Burton, Publishing 1948 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good No DJ Folio - over 12
Very nice, clean oversized book measuring 10"x12-1/2" with nice decoration at face and spine and no cracking to hinges, either front or back. Book is tighly bound and shows little external wear. Inside is also quite nice with the exception of the front endpapers which show a band of toning at top and a few spots at front free endpaper in the same area. There is a very handsome leaflet from the publisher laid-in designed in the same style as the book. This, too, is nice with the exception of a few spots to top front and some evidence of bygone silverfish due to removal of top layer of paper at a small area of bottom front. Text is a history in verse of the cow-punchers, prospectors, scouts, Texas Rangers, Mexicans, ranchers, trappers and eveyrone else who made the Old West. Illustrated with over 1300 drawings. Book concludes with a range dictionary of 17 pages. Publisher's print run was limited to 1100 copies, 200 of which were bound in cowhide, branded, and decorated. This one is the regular edition and is bound in sturdy black buckram.

Good Medicine: Memories of the Real Wast (1930), Russell, Charles M.
10 Russell, Charles M. Good Medicine: Memories of the Real Wast (1930)
Garden City, New York Garden City Publishing Company 1930 Hard Cover Hard Cover No DJ 4to - over 9" - 12" tall )
Very nice clean tightly bound book which was owned by Lonzo Green who was a serious book collector and minister at Lakeside, Ohio, a summer community on the Lake Erie islands. He stamped a fairly big notice on the half title page that the book was in his personal library. We have bought his books for years. This book has beautiful art -- full color lithographs on almost every page plus black and white. To tell his story Russell opened his personal letters ,which are very interesting , and offer glimpses of the Old West. The book measures 8-1/2" x 10-3/4" and has 162 pages.Only defects are small mild creases to back corners and a crease to top of spine.

Red-Hot Holsters; A Skinny Jeebles Story, Tomkinds, Walker A.
12 Tomkinds, Walker A. Red-Hot Holsters; A Skinny Jeebles Story
Akron, Ohio Saalfield 1938 Hard Cover Very Good No DJ, as Issued
The chunky Little Big books were the fad back in the 30's. They were cheaply made and cheap to buy, so it's amazing you can still find them in good condition. Here's one that beat the odds with all 396 pages intact and binding not cracked or broken. The only fault is toning to the cheap acidic paper. Illustrations are plentiful -- drawings by Henry Muheim. Book is designed with paper over boards. Minor wear to edges and small crease to corners. The boy who once owned it penciled his name and street at back of book. Book measures 3-1/2" x 4-1/2".

The Plains and The Rockies; A Bibliography of Original Narratives of Travel and Adventure 1800-1865, Wagner, Henry R.
13 Wagner, Henry R. The Plains and The Rockies; A Bibliography of Original Narratives of Travel and Adventure 1800-1865
Columbus Ohio Long's College Book Company 1953 Third Edition Revised Hard Cover Very Good No DJ Ex-Library
Book is clean and tightly bound with handsome brown boards printed in gilt on spine. For an ex-library this one is practically devoid of markings. All that it shows is one light stamp to bottom edge of text block and a stamped number on the bottom of the preface page. Otherwise VERY nice. Book also has a smattering of very small penciled notes beside some listings. These are easily erased, but in this instance may provide additional information of use to the reader. Handsome plates at back of book show title pages of some of the books mentioned. Detailed listings and 601 pages, plus plates.
