10 Leaver, Charles Lord Kilgobbin
Boston Little Brown 1899 Later Printing Hard Cover Very Good No DJ, as Issued
What a beauty this one is! Clean and tightly bound with no writing and almost no wear to the boards. The beautiful gilt decorations on both face and spine gleam brightly and there is lovely clean gilt at top edge as well. Charles Lever was a Dubliner and popular author of his day, even praised by Trollope for the naturalness of his writing voice. To appreciate fully a Leaver novel though, one needs to know but two things a.) he was an Irishman in the best sense of the word and b.) he was quite a mischief-maker and ringleader of pranks while studying at Trinity College Dublin. But the latter paid off, as many of his escapades landed in his novels, including this one , which has a chapter entitled "At Trinity." Wheeler's illustrations are wonderful too. This title has actually been reprinted not long ago and the softcover version costs almost as much as this beautiful old edition. 605 pages. A rolicking good read.
