2 Nautical Magazine New Series (April, September, 1876 November, December)
London, England Pewtress Company Printers 1876 Soft Cover Good
Four tightly bound magazines, each measuring 5-1/2"x8-1/2" sporting the same blue cover design with ads at back cover. This is a hard one to find in these early issues and all four are completely intact save a small loss of paper at spines. A few spines show evidence of reglueing to paper, but only at crown and tail of two. Spine paper has darkened and there are a few small exterior stains, plus dampstain mark to edges of a couple pages on two issues. Otherwise textblock is very clean on all. The advertising is wonderful with illustration in some instances. Magazine was published for the merchant marine and addresses itself to issues concerning same such as meterology, Canadian shipping, Atlantic steam ferries, the Merchant Marine Act of 1876, the health of seaman, international regulations, preventing collisions at sea, the Arctic Expedition, ports of Sicily, and the standing of iron ships and errors of compasses, plus much more. The publication was founded in 1832 and run by its founder, a British admiral, until 1871.

Two Years Before the Mast: Volume One, Volume Two in Slipcase, Dana, Richard Henry Jr.
13 Dana, Richard Henry Jr. Two Years Before the Mast: Volume One, Volume Two in Slipcase
Los Angeles, CA The Ward Ritchie Press 1964 Reprint Hard Cover iFine in VG Slipcase No DJ, as Issued
Two pristine books nestled in a very nice clean, sturdy slipcase. Pages and page edges are pristine and there are no bumps or creases and no names. The only fault is a tiny dot on the lower spine of each book, a quirky thing that thie sale I bought it from does to each book it sells. The book is a memoir originally published in 1840 following a trip the author took in 1836 from California to Boston in a merchant ship. The title's "before the mast" is something of an enigma, but it simply means the area where the common sailors were quarttered -- before the mast. Books are beautifully illustrated, including some with subtle color (see photo) . 552 pages. Volume II shows photographs at the back of book.Altogether nice enough to be a gift.

Toledo, Ohio Naval Records Club Inc. 1972 Vol. IX, No. 1 Soft Cover Very Good 4to - over 9" - 12" tall
These older issues are hard to come by, but we have a small stash of which this is one. Spine and back cover have toned with age and there is a faint crease to lower front corner, but overall it's tightly bound and clean. Really great fold-out inside (see photo 2). Today's version of this magazine is glitzier with coated white paper, but such was not the case here, though photographs abound and there is a lot to read. Feature articles include The Hunley Museum, Cruisers of the Imperial Russian Navy and Swedish Torpedo Boats and Destroyers. Magazine measures 8-1/2" x 11" with 98 pages.
