Cavanna, Betty Puppy Stakes Grosset & Dunlap Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Good-plus The beloved Betty Cavanna, whose books for girls were an enormous hit from the early 40's through the 60's, is here with her very first book written shortly after she quit her advertising job with Westminster Press to write full-time. Westminister published it in 1943, but what we have here is a collectible reprint done as part of a line called the Starlight Novels for Modern Girls. Boards are brown tweed, there is no date, and dustcover shows picture of a young girl surrounded by six puppies. Book is clean as a whistle inside and out with small creases at upper two corners, though both are straight and true with no collapse. The dustjacket is likewise clean and bright, but does show chipping along top front edge, at upper corners, and at crown of spine. Looks most handsome in brand new mylar cover. Though it has been price-clipped, the original price of $1.75 was inked at top of front endflap and is also on the small sticker showing it was purchased in Akron Ohio at the M. O'Neil Department Store. A dog lover's dream of a tale (tail?) about a young girl unhappily ensconced at her aunt's country home while her mother joins her father at his military base in California. Just when Janey is at her lowest ebb a litter of rambunctious cocker spaniels is born and Janey gets one of her own to train. The tiny town of Hammer Hollow during the WWII era is suddenly a wonderful place to be. Price: 20.00 USD
