Keene, Carolyn In the Shadow of the Tower New York Grosset & Dunlap Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Good The Dana Girls mysteries were one of the Stratemeyer Syndicates all time big sellers until the 1960's when they needed to be revamped. The copyright date here for this third volume in the series is 1934, but this copy, while early, was published after that. The series went through four consecutive binding colors -- purple, blue, green, and green tweed. Here we have a greenie, but we are not a hundred per cent sure on the date of it. We do know that it preceeds 1951, as that was the year wraparound pictorial dustjackets were added. This copy shows a picture on the front of the jacket and an ad for Nancy Drew novels on the back. Those in the know know that Carolyn Keene is the the pseudonym of the author of the Nancy Drews also, but both series shared at least one real author -- Mildred Wirt Benson. However, the first four Dana Girls, which includes this one, is the work of Leslie McFarlane who wrote to the specfications of creator, Harriet Strattemeyer. In this story the ever perfect Louise and Jan solve a mystery and help a hunch-backed girl in the process. Book is quite clean and tightly bound. There is mild corner wear to boards and some chipping at corners and crown and tail of spine of dustjacket, but book looks most handsome in brand new mylar cover. Price: 15.00 USD
