Very clean attractive book in original brown boards with gilt pictorial at face board which also shows a nice beveled edge. Faults include one small reglued tear to top of spine that is holding very well and fading of cloth at upper front corner to a lighter brown. Tightly bound with dark brown binding tape at hinges, neatly and beautifully done, both front and back to match endpapers. Most handsome in clear plastic cover. Copyright date is 1879 and print date is 1880, but gift inscription at first blank page is dated Christmas 1879. Inscription reads "Aubrey C. Bone with his father's love." Author was sent to the Lesser Antilles by the Smithsonian Institution in 1876 primarily to "bring to light their ornithological treasures," but in the end brings back much more. 33 illustrations all of which have been collated and are present. Text is very readable and interesting, told in the first person. 366 pages including lengthy appendix.
