Price: $60.00

Quantity: 1 available

Book Condition: Very Good

A rather hard-to-find book in overall quite good condition. Clean and tightly bound book with a small amount of soiling and external wear to embossed boards. Tightly bound with no cracking to hinges, either front or back, and no names or writing. Small amount of scattered foxing to nice white pages. Though there is no date printed, I did a a little sleuthing and was able to date it down to the year, thanks to an an ad at back for Stoddard House Hotel in the village of Farmington. Research showed that the proprietor, S.F. Stoddard, opened his resort in 1849 and remained at the helm until 1877. His ad says, "Mr. Stoddard, with an experience of twelve years as landlord and prioprietor...." -- bingo! -- book was printed in 1861. The front section is a regular business directory presented by town by town and is followed by "A Historical and Statistical View of Maine", county by county, plus an extensive section filled with illustrated advertising. This is the most interesting, as well as graphically appealing, section with ads for for hotels, furs, musical instruments, sewing machines, doctors and dentists, lawyers, boots and shoes, paint, parlor stoves, china and crockery, cement roofing, fancy soaps, fish and salt, black writing ink, medicines, and much more. 344 pages.
