Oh, this is a lovely thing -- beautiful as an object and accessible to the reader without a medical background. Bound in navy blue top grade pigskin with five raised bands to spine, gilt page edges on all three sides, and elaborate 22-karat gilding to both face and back boards. It's a hefty tome that feels grand to hold and is a bit oversized at 7"x9-1/2". The pages are pristine and the yellow satin bound-in marker clearly unused.A handsome black bookplate appears at front paste-down, beautiful against the paisley endpapers, and indicates copy number of the limited edition and the name of its original owner, all printed in gilt. Illustrations abound, the paper was specially made for this edition and and the typeface most handsome. Its only fault is a bit of gilt loss to face which, oddly, does not detract from it beauty, but rather lends an air of antiquity.Gaspare Tagliacozzi ranked among the most distinguished physicians of the Renaissance. Not only does the text relate his life story in an interesting fashion, but includes a documented study of the cultural and scientific life of Bologna in the sixteenth century. A gem of a book. 538 pages including index.
