Book is clean and tightly bound, but does show wear to crown and tail of spine including a small piece missing at crown. Hinges are tight, but back one shows a repair made with Japan paper similar in color to endpapers. Hinge is strong and tight, but you can see cracking to pages through repair paper (see photo). Silver ornamentation is bright on both face and spine and there are no names or writing. Book provides a detailed history of New York City's China Town during the last decade of the 19th century. Text is plentiful and detailed and is augmented by both both small black and white photos and drawings of daily life. The author covers quite a few topics including governance, the Chinese restaurants and laundries, the seclusion of women, family life, music, opium smoking (includes a detailed drawing of the apparatus), playing fan-tan, Chinese lotteries, prostitution, slave girls, Chinese funerals, Chinese cemeteries and much more. A fascinating book of 329 pages.
