This is an exquisite volume -- nicely made and detailed. Binding is leather with four raised bands at spine and bright, shiny gilt on all three sides of pages. Face board shows embossing and bright gilt printing too, as doesspine. There is some rubbing and spots where leather is lost at back cover in small smounts (see photo). Book is tightly bound with no cracking to hinges. Gorgeous marble endpapers in mustard yellow, brown and green are pristine and nicely finished with dentelles. Pages are very clean, . Book centers on ancient life in Egypt, Italy and Greece, discussing "employments, amusements, customs and habits, cities, palaces, monuments and tombs, literature and art." Lavishly illustrated throughout with wonderful engravings, some from original art, most from photographs. There are also seven full page steel plate engravings with tissue guards. These depict the palace of the Caesars, the house of the tragic poet Sallust, an Egyptian feast; the approach to Karnac, the temple of Karnac, the Philae Islands and the School of Vestal Virgins. 944 pages. Very accessible to the modern reader. Nice penciled gift inscription and also a paste-in notice that the book was won.
