I somehow missed this book when it came out, but it's a great read. It's about a a young professor, the author, who took 17 students on a sleep-over bus as part of Hofstra University's traveling course, Art and Culture Across America. This was the maiden voyage and it included reading 12 books by great American writers, saw Bob Dylan in Seattle, gambled at a Vegas casino, danced to Bourbon Street jazz in New Orleans, visited Elvis Presley's Graceland and William Faulkner's Rowan Oak. But that wasn't all -- they meditated at a Buddhist college, branded cattle, hiked the Rockies rode the rapids... View More...

I've been buying Ohioana since 1987 and I only now found this title. The schoolgirl look on the cover caught my eye, though I was surprised that it was about education in New Phildelphia. Yes, it's a serious look at the evolution of a school system. But there's good history in here too -- the part apout Union School and its fire and the story of the 1450 pound school bell. The book mesures 8-1/2" x 11" and has 132 pages. There are also many historic photographs and graphs View More...
