Nice, clean, solid book with handsome pictorial cover. Spine has faded a bit with a small loss of color publisher's name almost illegible at the bottom. Otherwise quite good. Minor wear to boards, but nothing egrigious and book is tightly bound with no crackign to hinges.. Contains 32 black and white plates. Book was serialized in the Strand Magazine in 1897 and published in book form in 1898. Beautiful book gently cared for. It's large with large photographs in color throughout. Book measures 9" x 12" and has 288 pages including index. Pages and page edges are white and bright and there's no spine crease and no names or writing. The only fault is a few light scratches to cover. This is an exquisite volume -- nicely made and detailed. Binding is leather with four raised bands at spine and bright, shiny gilt on all three sides of pages. Face board shows embossing and bright gilt printing too, as doesspine. There is some rubbing and spots where leather is lost at back cover in small smounts (see photo).
